Blogging using hosted platforms like blogspot.com, livejournal.com or friendster.com is free and it offers a lot of convenience  but has many limitations. It is always advisable for those who want to make blogging a lifetime endeavor to have a self-hosted blog with a domain name of choice.

Nowadays, building your own blog site with your own domain and hosting is very easy to do. You don’t have to know even the basics of HTML or PHP programming… All you need is passion to have your own blog and basic internet/computer skills (e.g. knowing how to type and click). If you are looking for the quickest way to build your blog with domains like www.your-name.com or www.whatever-name.com, here it is…in just three easy steps:

1. Buy a domain and hosting with Cpanel control panel

Register a domain name for your blog (e.g. www.your-name.com) and avail of a web hosting package with CPanel™ as the control panel software. Other companies use Plesk™ or some customized control panels. If you have the means to pay through credit card or Paypal, you should go for US-based registrars and web hosting companies. Many local companies are just resellers of these and are usually more expensive in the long run. The advantage of local registrars and webhosts is that you can pay them through bank deposit. Webhosts also offer domain registration services, or vice versa. I recommend Hostgator.com for a webhost…they have a guaranteed 99% uptime and an excellent customer service.

Beware of Philhosting.net, it’s a local webhost company…their service really sucks (servers are down most of the time) and they have the most lousy and anger-provoking customer service in the whole wide universe. (Sorry…I got carried away, but it’s true.)

2. Install Wordpress through Cpanel Fantastico De Luxe

Once you have your domain and hosting already running, log-in to your control panel, which should be www.your-domain.com/cpanel. You will be asked for your user name and password given by the host. In the control panel home page, look for Fantastico De Luxe (please refer to icon pointed by the yellow arrow in the snapshot below).

Click on Wordpress from the menu in the left panel, then click New Installation. What follows is an installation wizard which should be as easy as filling up a form, then just click Install Wordpress, confirm installation, then you’re done.

3. Log in to your blog admin and start customizing your blog

You blog’s admin section is at www.your-domain.com/wp-admin. Visit that page, log in, then familiarize yourself with Wordpress. It may take some time to completely grasp how the blogging platform is used but once you get to master it, it really pays off. Good thing that the latest version of Wordpress has become much more user-friendly than earlier versions and also compared to other current blogging platforms or CMS to date.

Enjoy and happy blogging. :)

Facebook is the most blogger-friendly social networking site I have ever known, specially if your blogging platform is Wordpress. For a hosted Wordpress blog, like mine, there are many ways to let your blog and your Facebook profile synchronize and interact.

Synchronized Facebook and Wordpress blog.

Synchronized Facebook and Wordpress blog.

First, your posts can be automatically fetched by Facebook and an announcement with a summary is displayed in your profile wall. Second, excerpts of your blog posts can be automatically posted as notes in your profile. So all you have to do is write and publish your posts and Facebook will just fetch these for you – no need to copy and paste into Facebook notes or to manually announce in your wall. And of course, the third, you can create a profile badge in Facebook that you can display in your blog’s sidebar as a widget. I’m sure you want to ask how…so here it is:

1. Download the latest version of WordBook – it’s the wordpress plugin you will use to automate the announcement of new posts in your wall – add, install, and activate it. (I’m assuming here that you have the latest version of Wordpress, version 2.7). After activation, don’t forget to fix its settings, where you have to enter a code you can get from Facebook. Just go to the settings page for this plugin and I’m sure it will be easy for you to follow on how to make this work.

2. Log in to your Facebook account, proceed to Notes, click on a link to import feeds from a blog, enter the URL of your RSS feed and submit.

3. Create a profile badge by going to your Profile, click on Create a Profile Badge link located in the bottom left portion of your profile page. Customize your badge, copy the HTML code and paste to a text widget in your Wordpress blog.

Seven ways to earn online

If you are spending lots of hours surfing the net or if you have an internet connection, you can earn from it. There are lots of ways to generate an extra income or make a living online. These are just some of the things that I know and have tried.

1. Build a blog or website and earn from affiliate and direct advertising.

This is one of the sure ways of earning money online. You can build a website or a blog, then join affiliate advertising networks like Google Adsense, Adbrite, or Yahoo YPN. These big online advertising companies are seeking website/blog owners to be their affiliate partners. For instance, if you are registered with Google Adsense, you can place advertising banners from them at any positions in your pages and you can get paid once an interested visitor clicks on any of these ads. Once your site has become popular and is receiving hundreds or thousands of visitors a day, you can offer premium advertising space for direct advertisers who might be interested to put their ads on your site…of course, for a fee.

2. Participate/write for a site and share from their advertising revenue.

If you think you cannot build your own site, just join big sites that share their advertising revenue. There are lots of this revenue-sharing sites around. You may just search Google to find most of them, but two of the legitimate and really paying revenue-sharing sites I know are Triond.com and MyLot.com. Beware of sites that are not really paying, read forum comments first before joining any revenue-sharing site.

3. Offer technical services online (e.g. tutorial, data entry, writing, research, web/graphic design, etc.).

If you have a particular expertise and you think you can compete globally or even locally, you can market y0ur skills online. For instance, if you are good in statistics, you can offer statistical analysis online. For me, I make websites and so I offer this service online wherever possible.  This is just a new way of selling your skills and it is a lot easier than offering your service by calling people or companies who might be interested. There are also sites where you can post your skills and where there are also lots of potential employers looking for their online/offline part-time or project-based employees. This is the concept of ODesk.com, so you have to check that site. Same warning applies: Beware of scam sites.

4. Get paid to surf the internet or to click.

Yes, you can get paid to surf the net and to click on links or banners. This can be the easiest way to earn money, you might think. But I think there are 8 scam sites out of 10 that offer this easy job. The really few legitimate sites do not send you many pages that earn you money when you visit. You can reach their minimum pay out (usually around $10 to $50) in 6 months or even a year. Sometimes, your only way to get more earnings is to invite people to join the network so you get meager commissions from their earnings. (What if your recruited members are not also earning much?. ) Obviously, I am not a big fan of this, so I am not recommending any site here, lest you blame me for your waste of time.

5.  Selling your products online (using your own website or some popular auction or buy/sell sites).

This is another sure way to earn you money online. If you are already a businessperson offline, you can take advantage of online auction or free classified ad sites to reach a bigger market without exerting much effort. Set up an online store at ebay or post at Sulit.com.ph, Tipidpc.com,88DB.com, and LibrePost.com.ph to expose your products to many potential customers. You can achieve better results if you also have a website where you have a complete catalog of all the products you are selling.

6. Selling thru dropshipping.

There are many companies abroad (dropshipping companies) that can ship their products to anywhere in the Philippines bearing your name and address as the sender. So, you can sell something online without really having a stock of the product/s. Once a customer places an order, you just contact the dropshipping company to send the ordered product directly to your customer, who may have no idea that the product did not actually come from you. If you think you can be good in this, this can be worth exploring because you don’t have to set aside a money for investment since you just pay the dropshipping company once you receive the payment of your customer. One of the dropshipping companies I know is the China-based LighInTheBox.com.

7. Online investment thru Forex trading.

This is my least explored money-making strategy online. I have tried forex for a short time just for experience. You need to be more or less financially secured to enter into this business because this involves risks. Forex (or Foreign Exchange) trading is  basically just buying or selling currencies, playing around the rise and fall of foreign exchange rates, to make profits. For instance, you buy US dollar when it is cheap and you will be selling it when it’s value has gone higher. This is risky and involves familiarity of the fundamental factors that affect exchange rates, but this can be the quickest way to become an online millionaire.
